Porta Fiorentina

The events of the Porta Fiorentina are closely linked to the foundation of Firenzuola, decided in 1306 by the Municipality of Florence to counter the power of the Ubaldini in the Alpe Fiorentina area. Construction began in 1332, with the laying of the foundation stone on 9 April, under the sign of Aries and with Leo ascendant, to guarantee stability and strength to the castle.
Designed with a rectangular wall and four main doors, the Porta Fiorentina was entrusted in 1335 to the masters Francesco di ser Cistio and Talento Ristori, but was destroyed by the Ubaldini in 1342.
The reconstruction of the town and its gates, including the Fiorentina, began in 1371, proceeding slowly until completion in 1418. The walls and gates were then reinforced in 1476, under the leadership of Antonio da Sangallo, to adapt to the new defensive needs . In 1874, the door underwent an expansion, with the transformation of the opening from rectangular to arched.
Today, the Porta Fiorentina, located south of the historic center, is a testimony to the past and a point of interest for those visiting Firenzuola.
The other gate of the historic center is the Porta Bolognese, which is located north of the historic center.
