Sasso di San Zanobi

sasso di san zanobi

The Sasso di San Zanobi, a unique rock formation in the Tuscan-Romagna Apennines, is located near the Raticosa pass, in the municipality of Firenzuola. This area, once home to the small church of San Zanobi, is also linked to a fascinating history: in the Middle Ages the Ubaldini family owned a fortress there.

Characterized by greenish and purple streaks, the Sasso is an ophiolite, a fragment of ancient oceanic crust that emerges from the mountains, testifying to an extraordinary geological past. Not far away, there are other similar formations, such as the Sasso della Mantesca and the Sasso delle Macine.

Legend has it that San Zanobi, with his miracle, overcame the devil in a challenge to carry a boulder to the top of the hill, an event that marked the territory and gave rise to a popular tradition that is still celebrated today with the feast of San Zanobi, the first Sunday of July.

A place of history, nature and legends, ideal for an evocative visit, both for geology lovers and for those looking for an immersive experience in local tradition.
